Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is going all in with his support of marijuana legalization, earning him the endorsement of the Alabama Cannabis Coalition.

According to Woodfin, "Alabama needs to legalize cannabis, not just because it's something that sounds nice, but because it advances justice and is good for our economy."

In a Facebook post touting his previous pardons for those convicted of possession, Woodfin said, "While other states have made strides forward, Alabama continues to take steps in the wrong direction."

"Historically, cannabis has been used to target Black and brown communities, getting folks jammed up for something as simple as possession," he claimed.

"Mayor Woodfin has been a courageous, bold and staunch supporter of Cannabis advocacy in the city of Birmingham since he pardoned 15,000 citizens convicted of Cannabis possession on April 20, 2021," H. Marty Schelper, the founder and president of the Alabama Cannabis Coalition said in a Facebook post calling on voters to support Woodfin in the August 26 municipal election.

Schelper continued, "Most recently, he stood in solidarity with the citizens of Alabama and the businesses of the Alabama Hemp Industry after the destructive legislation, AL HB445/2025, passed the Alabama Legislature on May 6, 2025, that dismantled the Alabama Hemp Industry. Mayor Randal Woodfin deserves your VOTE and your support."

House Bill 445 (HB445) was touted by its bill sponsor, State Rep. Andy Whitt (R-Harvest), in an op-ed published on 1819 News as "Alabama's first comprehensive legislation regulating hemp products – such as gummies and drinks – since the federal farm bill legalized hemp-derived cannabis in 2018."
